K-Pop Beyond The Charts: Kim Ban Jang Keeps The Uniquely Funky Solo Singles Coming With 'Drum' [AUDIO]

K-Pop Beyond The Charts is a weekly review column highlighting Korea's modern day musical innovators who have yet to find mainstream success.

"Give the drummer some," is the famous James Brown lyric from The Godfather of Soul's 1967 classic "Cold Sweat."

It's also the repeated refrain of Kim Ban Jang's high-energy new single "Drum," released on Wednesday.

The phrase works on several obvious levels for Kim. As the drummer and frontman of the Korean reggae group Windy City, he is clearly having some fun with the play on being the rare rhythm man (or woman) to front a group. But like the song itself, Kim's use of the "give the drummer some" hook shows that this performer has a clear knowledge of the legacy of American funk.

The members of the incredible band he has put together also clearly know the history of that unstoppable pre-laptop dance genre.

Kim, who has been on a tear as of late, releasing the eclectic '90s-infused dance single "No More Bad Mistake" just over a month ago, has clearly cranked up the heat on "Drummer." The song is a pleasant marriage of authentic 1970s dance grooves with the Windy City vocalist's playful and original approach to his music.

With the trends in popular music seeming to become more and more plastic and overproduced, both in South Korea and beyond, it becomes more and more important to celebrate the artists like Kim and his collaborators who have clear musical talent.

These are real deal musicians who aren't looking to work out choreography or gain a million Instagram followers.

This band can simply play their asses off. If that's not enough, I don't know what is.
