K-Pop Indie Spotlight: Hyukoh Charm Listeners With Their Chill Rock Sound On 'Comes And Goes' [VIDEO]

If you're not listening to Hyukoh, you're probably not in South Korea.

Although they just released their first album last year, this Korean indie band has shot to the top of the country's pop charts, even giving Hallyu superstars like Sistar, Girls' Generation and Big Bang a run for their money.

Walking around Seoul last week, it was impossible to avoid Hyukoh Band's songs coming out of speakers in every bar and food tent.

After appearing on the hit MBC show "Infinite Challenge" on July 4, Hyukoh's latest single "Comes and Goes," released on May 28 on Hyukoh's album "22," the group has become one of the most famous Korean acts of the moment. As of July 9, "Comes and Goes" was in the top 10 of every major Korean music chart.

It is likely that the dreamy "Comes And Goes" grabbed the attention of the nation with its unique laid-back rock sound, a rarity in the K-pop charts. Both soothing and energetic, with a simple production sound that is often missing in mainstream Korean music, "Comes And Goes" has something for everyone.

Starting off slowly with simple guitar rhythms, "Comes And Goes" takes its time before introducing Oh Hyuk's unique breathless and raspy vocal sound. The song suddenly snaps into an upbeat groove incorporating all of the skills of Hyukoh's bandmates.

Falsetto vocals blend with funky, feel-good live drumming and an in-the-pocket bassline on the song, which is sung in both English and Korean.

With the dancey, even disco-ish fun summer feeling of "Comes And Goes" it would be easy to write off Hyukoh's moment in the spotlight as just being a frivolous flash in the pan. But for at least the last 40 years, great indie bands from Talking Heads to Phoenix have been knocking the major label-financed monster acts off the charts for one simple reason--those original, organic grooves just feel better to dance to.

Don't fight the feeling.
