Review: Start A Party At Your Desk With Actor-Turned-Rapper So Ji Sub's New Single 'So Ganzi (WHITE)' [AUDIO]

Considering how much modern pop music sounds like it was created in the same factory somewhere, it is unceasingly exciting when an artist can take that same formula of verse, chorus, verse and create something unheard before, something so funky that you're dancing before you even have time to let your more finicky inner monologue take over.

On the surface, there's nothing extraordinary "So Ganzi (WHITE)," the new single, released on Wednesday by South Korean actor and rapper So Ji Sub alongside a slower version of the same composition entitled "So Ganzi (BLACK)."

But then you're dancing.

And when the song ends and the party stops, you may very well want to hear this intricately layered, deeply soulful song again.

"So Ganzi (WHITE)" also features top-notch contributions from Soul Dive and Newday and...you know what? Just press play on the little box at the bottom of the review. Okay, you got that going? You hear that groove?

If you are still sitting at your desk reading this and not moving around at least a little bit, you are either trapped at work or just not that funky.

I could tell you how So's disaffected rhyme style is reminiscent of British electro groups like Faithless or Pet Shop Boys. I could discuss the subtle layers of vocoder vocals that are mixed so far back they only become noticeably after several listens. I could talk about how it seems like sometimes in South Korea, perhaps because they are already famous, the actors making music often seem to be the mainstream artists willing to take the most musical risks and to keep things raw.

But you know, it's Friday and I'm a bit too busy dancing right now.
