K-Pop Beyond The Charts: Electro Pop Trio Trampauline Forge A Sound All Their Own On 'Such A Clown' [AUDIO]

K-Pop Beyond The Charts is a weekly review column highlighting Korea's modern day musical innovators who have yet to find mainstream success.

What does it mean for something to be a "dance" song?

Does it have to be a relentless beat that defeats your ability to not strip off the better part of your clothing and head for the dance floor?

And what does the term "electro" really even mean anyway, when you'd be hard-pressed to find a mainstream rock band anywhere in the world not using some form of electronic effects or a laptop, at the very least, during their live set.

Like the word "pop," these terms are highly subjective and like the word "musicality," difficult to define in any all-encompassing way.

It would be easy to write a review of "Such A Clown," the new single released Tuesday by all-girl Seoul-based trio Trampauline trumpeting the musicality of their particular brand of electropop referencing several generations of dance music, from New Order to Foster the People, from Pet Shop Boys to Cibo Matto.

But what really makes this group special is their unique take on keyboard-driven dance music. From Jeong Dayoung's rhythmically inventive, melodic basslines to Kim Naeun's perfectly constructed guitar parts recalling the shimmer of both South African funk and Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Trampauline put a lot of heart into this track.

And at the center of it all is a soulful vocal performance from keyboardist and frontwoman Cha Hyosun. In both her keyboard and vocal sound, there is no shortage of easy influences to spot. As any modern musician exists in a word with a seemingly endless amount of recordings already made, the singer-keyboardist clearly has a preference for certain artists like Kate Bush or Feist, but also something more, that is truly all her own.

Like her bandmates, the sound Cha produces is clearly coming from an honest place, making the music of Trampauline original and appealing.

It may not have you tearing off your clothes to practice the latest move, but it will having you hitting the replay button to experience that excellent '80s-infused groove one more time.
