Kim Myungsoo Opens Up About Career, L and Future Projects [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

It's been eight years since we've known him as L. However, the last couple of year's he's also made a name for himself as an actor with his birth name, Kim Myungsoo.

Making his debut in 2010 as L of Infinite, the singer/actor promoted popular songs, such as "Be Mine", "Paradise" and "The Chaser", that helped shape the K-pop's global phenomenon with second generation artists.

The multi-talented K-pop first made his way Stateside five years ago when Infinite held their first ever U.S. tour. followed by another one in 2016. However, seeing him roll solo brought a different vibe to him. More composed, suave and formal. Compared to L, Kim Myungsoo had a strong actor vibe to him - well-polished, charismatic, and, of course, good looking.

We caught up with Kim Myungsoo moments before he took over the K-Expo 2018 to talk about his career, music and the globalization of Kpop as an artist part of the second wave.

It's been a while since you've been in NY, is there something you wish to do while you're here?

KMS:  I've done a lot of things already. I went to see Frozen The Musical on Broadway and I went shopping in Soho and Woodbury Commons. This time there was a chance to do a lot of things that I couldn't do last time I was here so I'm really having a great time

As someone who made their debut 8 years ago as an Infinite member, how do you feel about the globalization of Hallyu?

KMS:  This is the result of everyone working and practicing so hard. The result of everyone's accomplishments, as one of the people who has practiced so hard I'm really proud and happy about it.

What's more difficult, in your opinion, singing or acting?

KMS: Both are really hard. In my free time I practice a lot because both are so hard.

Is there anything else you're practicing right now?

KMS:  Since singing and acting are so hard I focus on a high concentration of those two.

What are the best things about acting?

KMS:  It's very exciting to be another version of myself; to be someone else. To obtain a different personality or occupation is the most exciting part about it.

So there must be a difference between L and Myungsoo, when you use that name. Is there a difference between those personalities?

KMS: As Myungsoo I'm more known as an actor and L I'm more known for my singing. The difference between the two would just be my role.

Which one has more swag?

KMS:  (Laughs) L has more swag!

If you could recommend your top 3 Korean dramas or films to a stranger what would they be?

KMS: Can I list the dramas I was in? Miss Hammurabi is my #1, The Netflix drama 헤어진 다음날 (One More Time), and a more traditional Korean drama called 군주-가면의 주인 (The Emperor: Owner of the Mask).

Out of all of the dramas you've done so far, who would you say you relate to the most?

"내겐 너무 사랑스러운 그녀 (My Lovely Girl)" showed the risk of being a singer, so that is the one I relate to the most.

Your favorite Western movie or actor of all time?

KMS:  Rachel McAdams.

Is she your ideal type?

KMS: I really like her acting.

How do you relieve stress or spend your free time when you have no schedules

KMS: I don't do anything and just rest at home. I lay in bed, turn on the tv, and eat.

What's next for Kim Myungsoo?

KMS: I'm preparing my own solo album and I'm considering some films. I'm not sure what will come first, the singing or acting, but I'm excited to share with fans what's coming next.

Any message for your fans?

KMS: I'm happy to be back in NYC after such a long time. I'm really happy and excited to show you guys all of the performances I've prepared, and I look forward to coming back. Thank you always for your love and support.
