Sunmi’s “Gashina” Reaches 100 Million Views on YouTube

Congratulations to Sunmi for achieving a remarkable YouTube record!

On June 4 at around 11 a.m. KST, the solo artist's MV for "Gashina" exceeded 100 million views on YouTube. This achievement is approximately one year, nine months, and 13 days since the day her single was released on August 22, 2017.

With that being said, it is Sunmi's first ever music video to gain over 100 million views. She now joins the list of K-pop female artists who have acquired such accomplishment; the other music videos are Jennie's "SOLO," Taeyeon's "I," HyunA's "Bubble Pop!" and "Ice Cream," and IU's "Palette."

Sunmi is a past member of Wonder Girls under JYP Entertainment. The girl group disbanded last January 26, 2017. On March 14, 2017, it was reported that Sunmi signed a contract with Makeus Entertainment before February ends that year. It was then revealed that Sunmi would have her first solo comeback since the disbandment of the group with a new single on August 22. Her single is entitled "Gashina," which is produced by Teddy Park of the Black Label.

Moreover, the song "Gashina" is Sunmi's first release as a solo artist after three years since her first solo extended play (EP) entitled Full Moon, which was launched on February 17, 2014, by JYP Entertainment while still a member of one of K-pop's most iconic girl groups, the Wonder Girls.

The song "Gashina" has two meanings. First, the Korean word "Gashi" means thorns of a flower, which can be seen in the lyrics. The title also denotes the phrase "Why are you leaving?" or simply the term "goes" or "leaves." Both of these can be seen in Sunmi's choreography with her flower hands and gun fingers.

In addition to this, Sunmi gave another meaning to her single. She said that it also means "thorns appear or grow in my body.

Sunmi's "Gashina" features a hooking mid-tempo chorus. It is so catching that the song topped the Gaon Digital Chart and it has sold over 1,100,000 digital downloads as of December 2017. It also ranked number 3 on The Best K-pop Songs of 2017: Critics' Picks and number 9 on 20 Best K-pop songs of 2017.

On top of that, it was included in the top lists on weekly charts in South Korea and the United States in 2017. Also, Sunmi received the "Song of The Year" award for Gashina on the 7th Gaon Chart Music Awards in 2018.

As of March 4, 2019, Sunmi's latest single is "Noir." It talks about the pretenses of social media and the obsession with getting acceptance through likes.
