Will Beatles of Korea Come Out Again?

In the history, there's always somebody who becomes the pioneer leading the flow and setting a revolution. There was Beatles in the history of world music and another in K-Pop as well referred as Beatles of Korea.

The Beatles are a rock band formed in Liverpool, England in 1960. Referred as ‘one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music. One of the groups that most people remember left 3 marks in musical history first groundbreaking music, record setting commercial success and social impact.

The Beatles music first began rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll however later worked in different genres from folk rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, chamber pop, power pop, progressive rock, jangle pop and impacted the birth and development of various genres, effecting musicians in various genres as well.

The first single ‘Love Me Do’ composed and produced by George Martin in 1962 swept the UK charts. By 1970 the group released a total of 12 studio albums and is estimated to have sold over one billion units. The group also holds the record for most number one hits on the Hot 100chart with 20 songs in the history of Billboard.

Also Beatles not only became an icon in music but in 1960s became a catalyst in various social and political fields by being perceived by fans and cultural observers as an embodiment of ideals. They were not merely satisfied with a small gesture to resist the conservative social trend. The group began to feel pressure to deliver and spread the message through their music.

March 23 today marked an important day in K-Pop history. It is the day Seo Taiji who is referred as ‘the president of culture’ debuted. Korea music industry critics say the group’s emergence divided Korea pop music as before and after Seo Taiji & Boys.

This group also held the three aspects that Beatles had as well groundbreaking music, record setting commercial success and social impact.

The time when music genres such as trot, ballads were popular they introduced new jack swing-inspired beats, upbeat rap lyrics and catchy choruses struck a chord with young people. Being the first of its kind in Korean pop.

The group released 4 albums selling over 7 million copies. Their second album ‘Hayeoga’ for the first time in recorded the country’s first ever becoming a ‘double million seller.’ Every album they produced covered a wide range of musical genres, both surprising musicians and non-musicians as well

Seo Taiji didn’t hide his criticism of Korean education system bringing on numerous controversies. For the teens that felt oppressed felt invigorated by their music. In an instant anything of Seo Taiji & Boys became prevalent also impacting the fashion industry as well.

The influence of Seo Taiji can still be felt and heard in Korea’s music industry, such as the organization and formation of fan culture and idol groups were born out of such foundations. Second generation idols such as H.O.T. and Sechs Kies followed, which leads to the current third generation idol such as TVXQ and Big Bang.

Since then K-Pop has experienced another change, the stage was moved to world stage. Many K-pop artists are now writing a new history of K-Pop all around the world in different regions.

K-Pop music has become westernized and became similar to western pop music yet maintained the Asian feeling. And their dances even became better than those of western musicians. K-Pop has an image of connecting between Disney and pop while maintaining Disney’s pureness and have popular sexy image. Now K-Pop transformed into more western music is now spreading out to the world beyond Korea.

Such changes have brought in surprising results. Such as holding a Europe concert for the first time as Korean artist in 2011 and first Asian performance at Madison Square Garden in New York by SM Entertainment and K-Pop concert held by 4minute, BEAST, and G.NA in South America.

2NE1 won ‘The Best New Band in the World’ by MTV Iggy on November, 2011 while Big Bang won ‘2011 MTV Europe Music Awards’ for the first time as Korean artist. TVXQ became the first foreign artist to have 10 singles rank #1 on Oricon weekly chart setting a new record in Oricon’s history.

K-Pop idol’s concert is generating additional economic benefits and helping the industry as well. If there was a one person effecting one country 20 years ago, now these days many are bringing a sensational revolution. Such as the case of Seo Taiji the Beatles of Korea. It's exciting to anticipate how K-Pop that is leading another cultural revolution to spread out even further worldwide.
