‘Supergirl’ TV Show Rumors: Will Be Produced By Michael Green? Story To Resemble ‘Smallville’? Problems With Origins In DC Universe Without Superman?

As comic book adaptations continue to spread across film and television, the latest superhero franchise to surface is a "Supergirl" TV series. Allegedly, the series is currently being pitched to networks by Warner Bros. and will reportedly be produced by former "Supergirl" writer Michael Green. In addition to this, many have begun to speculate about the plot people can expect. Some say because it's Michael Green, a "Smallville" origin story might be coming but others worry how it will happen without the presence of "Superman" on the small screen.

According to Screenrant, it all started with a claim from Bleeding Cool that, "DC Comics is currently actively pitching Supergirl as a TV series, and Green is attached." Since then, the reports have been off and running, but it's not that hard to believe given all the other comic books coming to TV, including Marvel's "Agent Carter". A "Supergirl" TV show makes sense to continue to at least go toe to toe with the other comic book powerhouse.

Screenrant speculates however, "there's no question that adapting the character to TV would be a difficult task - a fact Green would be aware of, having co-written the character's re-launch as part of DC's ‘New 52′ reboot." They go on to explain that while the obvious and deceptively easiest adaptation would be to resemble "Smallville's," premise, it would be hard to do without an appearance from "Superman." Unfortunately, that seems no longer possible since Geoff Johns stated that the film and TV DC Universes would be separate going forward.

Comic Book suspects that "Supergirl" will get off the ground somehow (if it really is being shopped around) mainly because of fan criticisms about the lack of female superheroes on TV. Nevertheless, if the alleged report about "Supergirl" is a real thing, it may be a good push forward for Marvel to fulfill their promise of an appearance from Ms. Marvel (Captain Marvel).
