Rachel McAdams To Star In True Detective Season 2? ‘The Notebook’ Actress May Play Female Lead In HBO Series, But Is She Competing Against ‘Mad Men’’s Elisabeth Moss?

Could Rachel McAdams be picking up where Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson left off? The star of "The Notebook" is rumored to be circling a leading role in HBO's series "True Detective."

But is McAdams competing for the gig against "Mad Men" star Elisabeth Moss?

According to buzz circulating around the Internet, McAdams is being considered for the role of a "no nonsense" sheriff in California who turns to booze and gambling as a result of her dark past.

Variety reports that Elisabeth Moss, known for her strong roles in AMC's "Mad Men" and the 2013 mini-series "Top of the Lake," is also vying for the role.

Season two of the HBO series is believed to open on the eve before a major transportation deal. The story will supposedly launch as a corrupt businessman is found brutally murdered.

Although none of the season 2 cast has yet been confirmed, Variety reports that Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn are all in final negotiations for leading roles.

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto has signed back on to pen the second season, while multiple directors may helm the season's episodes.

Justin Lin, who directed several films in the "Fast & Furious" franchise, is rumored to be in contention.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, HBO director of programming, Michael Lombardo, gave some insight on the hit series and what fans can expect from the sophomore season.

"When you have a success like True Detective it's challenging, less for us and more for someone like Nic, how to face the page again and start afresh and not be haunted by the success of the show you've just done," said Lombardo. "But the writing is better than last season. It's exceptional."

As for McAdams, a role in "True Detective" would mark the actress's first major television project, although she did star in a few television movies over ten years ago.  

McConaughey and Harrelson each earned critical acclaim and Primetime Emmy Award nominations for their roles in the HBO series.
