‘Lost’ Star Evangeline Lilly And Orlando Bloom Feature In ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’ Trailer [VIDEO]

The first trailer of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" went live yesterday, five months away from the premiere date of the trilogy's second installment. Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, and an angry dragon named Smaug featured in the "Hobbit" video.

Evangeline Lilly plays the only female character in the movie, Tauriel. Her character was not in the original J.R.R Tolkein books, but was added to the story by director Peter Jackson to balance out the male-heavy film. Lilly, the former star of the TV series "Lost," plays a female elf from Mirkwood and bodyguard for the dwarves and hobbit.

"She's slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn't hesitate to kill," Lilly told Entertainment Weekly.

Orlando Bloom is reprising his role as elf archer Legolas, a favorite to many fans of "The Lord of the Rings" saga. Bloom first appeared as Legolas in 2001.

According to MTV.com, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" recounts the early adventures of Frodo Baggins' older cousin Bilbo (Martin Freeman), as he travels with dwarves led by Thorin (Richard Armitage) to retrieve the gold stolen from their people by a dragon named Smaug (played in motion capture by Benedict Cumberbatch).

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" opens in theaters on December 13.
