Demi Lovato Says New Album "Therapeutic" After Being A Child Star Left Her "Confused", Battling Drugs, Bulimia

Demi Lovato is just 20, so it's incredible that she's on her forth album. Also incredible is the honesty Lovato has displayed with her struggles. Now, Lovato says writing her new album "Demi" helped her fight her inner demons.

Three years ago, Lovato was in rehab due to bulimia, self-harming, and self-medicating with drugs and alcohol. Now, however, she is stronger and wiser.

''My life has changed so much. I am vulnerable and honest in this record, the way I've always wanted to be. I was ready to come out of the darkness," she said.

''Writing this album was therapeutic, it helped me get rid of my demons. I am a warrior now - I've been through so much in the past years, it was hard to find the courage to get out of it and write about it, I was afraid no one would understand my message.''

Being a former child star was difficult and may have been to blame for the issues Lovato struggled with, she says. But Demi says writing the album helped her work through issues and become more positive.

Lovato admitted that being a child star left her confused. It's not an easy life. She said it left her vulnerable and distracted.

''I spent so much time trying to figure out what the right thing to do was, that I got distracted along the way by fun and temptations and that's why I ended up in rehab at 18," Lovato said.

Lovatos' fourth album has just been released. It debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 Chart. When it was released, Lovato said,

"I'm incredibly proud of this album. It's better than anything I have ever done!

"I experimented with a variety of different sounds and poured my heart into writing these songs. I'm so excited for everyone to finally get the chance to hear them!"
