Top prospect Zack Wheeler ready for New York Mets debut, Why Zack Wheeler is Hyped as the Baseball's' Next Great Pitching Stud

Zack Wheeler is no savior. But, for the New York Mets and Major League Baseball in New York City, he comes pretty close to being one.

Who would have thought the big story in baseball coming up on Tuesday would be emanating from the day/night doubleheader in Atlanta between the struggling Braves and the terrible New York Mets. But, this is where all eyes in baseball are riveted. It's Zack Wheeler time in major league baseball.

Who is Zack Wheeler? He certainly isn't Sandy Koufax or Cy Young, two of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. But, for the Mets fans in New York, who have been crying for something good to cheer about for about 13-years, or since the Mets last appeared in a World Series, Zack Wheeler comes with a lot of excitement as he and his 99 mph fastball are finally coming up to the major leagues to pitch Tuesday night in Atlanta.

Bearers of the third-worst record in baseball, the New York Mets have plenty of problems, and pitching is certainly one of them. Other than ace righty Matt Harvey, no Mets pitcher has an ERA in the top 30 of the National League. The organization finally called up Wheeler this week to remedy the situation and perhaps salvage the rest of a disappointing season, but the rookie isn't making any promises about his impact.

"I don't think I'm the savior at all," Wheeler said at a press conference in Atlanta. "We've got great arms here, and we've got great players. We might not be doing too well right now, but I know the talent of these guys. Hopefully we can turn it around here soon."

The first-place Braves' prolific bats won't be the only things pressuring Wheeler when he makes his debut on the road Tuesday. He will be pitching the second game of a split doubleheader, and Harvey is starting the first. In just his second year in the big leagues, Harvey has established himself as one of the nation's best pitchers with a 2.04 ERA, 5.10 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 0.907 WHIP. His debut wasn't too shabby, either. The righty blew away expectations by allowing just three hits and striking out 11 in 5.1 scoreless innings, a dazzling line that Wheeler doesn't expect to replicate.

"That's the thing, he set the bar so high because he just took off once he came up here," Wheeler said of Harvey. "I'm just going to go out there and do the best that I can."

The Mets hope his best is as good as most baseball scouts think he is, which would put him in line to be the best pitcher in the game if talent is al it takes. Only time will tell.
