‘Pacific Rim’ Gets Sequel, Guillermo Del Toro Says: Alien Sci-Fi Flick To Be Movie Of The Summer? Watch Latest Trailer Here

A "Pacific Rim" sequel is in the works, said Guillermo del Toro today, anticipating that the sci-fi alien flick will prove to be the movie of the summer.

"We've been talking about the idea for it and working on a pitch," del Toro said about the "Pacific Rim" sequel, Deadline Hollywood reported. "And there will be a Mexican Jaeger," he joked of the giant Kaiju monsters in the movie.

The "Pacific Rim" plot revolves around giant robots called Jaegers battling huge alien invaders, or Kaiju, to protect the Earth. The robots are controlled by pairs of soldiers via mental links to the machines and to their partners.

The film will be out in theaters on July 12.

"Having had two to three years pass from the first 'Pacific Rim' to the second movie, we can also prepare a good video game, continue the graphic novel and continue the mythology," the "Pacific Rim" director said.

Although del Toro is excited about a sequel to the film, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull is taking a more cautious approach.

"We'd like to do it, but it's up to the audience - ultimately we'll have to see how it goes," Tull said.

Fans don't have long to wait for the first "Pacific Rim" film to be released and for more solid word on the sequel; the movie will hit theaters in less than a month. Reviews of "Pacific Rim" are beginning to trickle in.

Movie Hole recently reviewed a 15-minute preview of the film. Mandy Griffiths noted that she was unimpressed with the initial trailer, but despite her low expectations, the first few minutes of the film blew her away.

"I came into this screening prepared to be unimpressed, but it had very much the opposite effect. Sure this film needed 'Transformers' to come before it, as that franchise has paved the way for many like it, but unlike 'Transformers' you can follow the action, it doesn't chop around to create motion sickness, they have attempted to create characters you can care about, and if you could ever describe robots and aliens as graceful in battle, this is probably it," wrote Griffiths. "It seems like they actually have a story to tell here and whether or not they can sustain this quality over an entire film is still open to judgment, but I'm excited to see more."

Boxoffice.com reporters screened the full film, and expressed excitement about its widespread release.

"Saw this recently. Action, visuals were awesome...monster versus robot fighting was quite the spectacle (though unfortunately the last big scene wasn't as good as the one before it)," the publication's article stated.

"Pacific Rim" hits theaters on July 12 and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day.
