Denver Tornado Near International Airport According to Radar [Video & Pics]

A Denver tornado had everyone at Denver's airport on high alert, as radar spotted the funnel shape of a tornado earlier this afternoon.

According to the Associated Press, radar showed that a tornado briefly touched down on the east runway of the Denver International Airport this afternoon at around 2:24 pm Mountain Time.

A weather station near the Denver International Airport (DIA) clocked winds traveling at 97 mph before it was knocked out of commission.

Thousands of people took cover in bathrooms and stalls in the airport as the Tornado warning sounded sending panicked Denver travelers looking for cover.

Yesterday, a tornado touched down in La Junta, in Colorado's southeastern plains before the Rockie Mountains of Denver. No injuries were reported in yesterday's Colorado Tornado.

So far there has been no report of injuries or even destruction and it appears the Denver Tornado just passed very closely to destroying their international airport and possible taking lives.

Daily KOS' weather blog, offered specifics on the Denver Tornado:

"The tornado was so close to the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar - the small Doppler radar used for Denver International Airport - that a "donut hole" was visible in the precipitation-free center of the tornado as it crossed between runways 34R and 34L.

"The tornado passed exactly 5,000 feet east of the A Gates."
