`Sharknado 2’ in the works at the SyFi Channel; This Time They Will Take a Bite Out of New York City

“Sharknado 2” is coming to Syfy. The science fiction channel broadcast the TV movie “Sharknado” on July 11 and before it was even televised it started a social media feeding frenzy. That didn’t help “Sharknado’s” ratings though. Only 1.4 million people turned in to watch. Normally that kill a follow-up movie from getting the okay for future movies. But no, it looks like the SyFy channel got itself “a bigger chopper.”

“Sharknado 2” is coming. The SyFi channel announced that it gave the green light to a sequel to Sharknado and this time the shark will feast on New York City. The sequel, is going under the working title “Sharknado 2,” will be produced by The Asylum, which produced the original. “Sharknado 2” is scheduled to premiere on Syfy in 2014.

To celebrate the dangerous waters, Syfy also announced a Twitter contest on Twitter for fans to come up with a subtitle for the movie. Sharknado fans are asked to tweet their ideas for a subtitle to @SyfyMovies using #Sharknado. Syfy will select pick the best subtitle.

Thomas Vitale, the EVP of Programing and Original movies at Syfy, said “Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm – on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel. What we can guarantee is that Sharknado 2 will be lots of fun. We’ll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn’t want our fans to worry they wouldn’t get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year.”

In “Sharknado,” regulars of a beachside bar including owner Fin, played by Ian Ziering of “Beverly Hills 90210,” bartender Nova , played by Cassie Scerbo of “Make It Or Break It” and barfly and local drunk George, played by John Heard of “After Hours” and “Home Alone,” team up with Fin’s ex-wife April , played by Tara Reid of “American Pie,” “Josie and the Pussycats,” “Scrubs” and “The Big Lebowski,” to investigate the ecological nightmare that has sharks swimming through the streets of Los Angeles and falling from the skies.
