Matt Sandusky name change is in the works because the adopted son of former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky who is currently serving a 30 to 60 years sentence for child sexual abuse.

Besides Matt Sandusky, his wife and four children have asked for the name change by filing the court documents in Centre County Court in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. This is an opportunity for him and his family to escape the name tainted by Jerry Sandusky and start anew.

The Matt Sandusky name change comes more than a year after Jerry's sentencing. Jerry Sandusky sexually abused 10 children in 15-year period. One of the children he sexually abused was Matt Sandusky.

He originally denied being abused by his adopted father, but during jury deliberations, he admitted to his attorney that he, too, was a victim. Matt Sandusky was supposed to be a defense witness for Jerry until he decided to come forward.

In a 2012 interview with police, Sandusky said his family was the reason he revealed his stepfather was abusing him.

"They can really have closure and see what the truth actually is," he said.

During the almost two-week trial, prosecutors portrayed Sandusky as a serial child molester who used the Second Mile, the charity he founded, to recruit his victims, befriending them and "grooming" them with gifts, trips to Penn State football games and money.

Head Coach Joe Paterno died after Sandusky was arrested after being fired as Penn State coach after 61 years with the team. Not going to authorities after finding out Jerry Sandusky possibly molested a child in the shower caused helped lead to his firing and shortly after, he passed away.
