American Horror Story Season 3 Won't Feature James Cromwell: Asylum Actor Admits, 'Horror Is Not My Favorite Genre'

While "American Horror Story " season 3 has started filming in New Orleans with a lot of original cast members, one actor who won't be joining "Coven" is "Asylum" series regular James Cromwell.

"Horror is not my favorite genre, out of ignorance," says the actor during a recent interview with Huffington Post.

"It wasn't until I got to do it that I realized the genius of it. It's the exploration of American mores inside a genre."

For season 3, "American Horror Story" will be tackling a whole new American vignette with reported inspirations from the Salem Witch Trials and possibly slavery.

As previously reported, the cast will feature returning players Lily Rabe, Francis Conroy, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Taissa Farmiga, and Evan Peters. Joining "Coven" will be newcomers Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, and Patti LuPone.

The massive female cast makes sense for a season called "Coven," but what about male actors like Cromwell?

"I've heard I'm not in it," jokes Cromwell. "They keep core people, and if the storyline the next year fits you, as an actor, they keep you. Which I think is a wonderful idea and it is unique in television."

"But I [am not] in the next storyline."

"American Horror Story: Coven" will premiere this October on FX.
