ComicCon 2013 X-Files 20th Anniversary Panel: Possible Movie? Fans Want To Believe

ComicCon 2013 had an X-Files 20th Anniversary panel that was highly anticipated.

The iconic science fiction series, The X-Files, debuted in 1993. And at this year's ComicCon, the truth was out there...again.

The panel, on day 2 of ComicCon in Ballroom 20, featured appearances by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who played Mulder and Scully on the classic sci-fi show.

The two appeared with creator Chris Carter to discuss the legacy of The X-Files and its impact on pop culture and television.

In many ways, "The X Files," which opened the door for genre science fiction and fantasy in mainstream TV culture.

The panel was moderated by TV Guide's Los Angeles Bureau Chief Michael Schnieder. He called the show "groundbreaking" and said it "[made] genre safe for mainstream television."

X-Files blended romance, comedy, and traditional sci-fi tropes. Its central premise was that the government is monitoring people in an effort to control them. (Ironic, huh?)

Fans, many of whom were born after the show was shuttered, began lining up at midgnight the day before the panel.

One juicy tidbit of news from the Comic-Con International panel was that Anderson and Duchovny left open the possibility of a new movie.

The crowd, of course, applauded wildly, and Carter looked visibly moved.

"If we have a chance to come back together, we will," Duchovny said.

Anderson teased the audience about a sex scene that was shot but never aired, saying, "Am I supposed to behave myself?"

The show is credited with inspiring women to go into science and inspiring a host of other television shows.

"Sci-fi works best when it explores strange new worlds, but with one foot still on Earth," one fan said about The X-Files. "That show made people look to the stars again, and for an hour every week, just like Mulder's office poster, they wanted to believe."
