Flaming Lips Burn New Sounds to Pink Floyd's `Dark Side of the Moon'; Plan a `Sgt Pepper' Tribute With Miley Cyrus

Flaming Lips are obsessed with Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon," first they released a track-by-track cover of the album, now they released a companion album to Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side'. You can tell these guys never watched "The Wizard of Oz" without Roger Waters and the boys playing in the background. Flaming Lips currently working on a tribute to the Beatles' psychedelic classic "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with Miley Cyrus.

Last week, the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne took to Instagram to announce that the band is recording music with Miley Cyrus.

But if you can't wait, the Flaming Lips issued a companion piece to Pink Floyd's classic psych-rock album "Dark Side of the Moon" today.

The new mashup is called "Flaming Side of the Moon." You should listen to the record at the same time as you listen the Pink Floyd album. It's even better if you have the two of them playing and have the movie "The Wizard of Oz" playing on a TV screen.

In 2010, the Flaming Lips put out track-for-track remake of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." After the record came out The Flaming Lips played the Pink Floyd album front-to-back during their New Year's Eve show in Oklahoma City.

This one they're calling "an immersive companion piece."

In a press release, the band said "Listeners are encouraged to listen to the new Lips album while listening to Dark Side of the Moon at the same time. For ideal listening conditions, fans are encouraged to seek out the original Alan Parsons-engineered quadraphonic LP mix of Dark Side, but it will work with the album on any format."

The press release continues "'Flaming Side of the Moon' was also carefully crafted to sync up perfectly with the 1939 film, 'The Wizard of Oz.'"

"Flaming Side of the Moon" is available "through all participating digital outlets." The band will distribute 100 limited edition vinyl copies to the band's friends and families.

The Flaming Lips are currently recording a "St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" tribute record with Miley Cyrus, Tame Impala and MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden.
