With only four games left on their schedule, the Toronto Maple Leafs (38-32-8) will be home vs the Winnipeg Jets (34-34-10). This will be the second meeting between these two this season. The Leafs have some bad news down the stretch and potentially through some of the playoffs because it was announced that starting goalie Jonathan Bernier will miss three weeks with a strained MCL. Bernier was injured in the third period of a 4-3 overtime win against the Boston Bruins on Thursday, according to NHL.com.
"[Bernier] is disappointed. There is really nothing you can do. ... Those are the type of injuries that you don't like to see happen, but they do happen," Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said after practice Friday. "Now we have to move forward without Bernier."
Backup James Reimer stopped 10 of 11 shots after coming in for Bernier on Thursday.
"We've won two in a row now, so that's a starting point," center Tyler Bozak told ESPN.com. "We have huge games coming up here to end the season. But that was a tough test for our team tonight, and we were able to come out on top."
Coach Paul Maurice led Winnipeg to an 11-3-1 mark in the first 15 games after he replaced Claude Noel on Jan. 12. The team has been slumping lately and the Jets are now out of the playoff-race.
"The hole we put ourselves in at the beginning of the year, it's tough to climb back," center Olli Jokinen told the team's official website. "But at the same time, we took huge steps ahead getting back in the (race) and making it exciting. We put ourselves in a position where we still had a chance, and that's something that the guys can proud of."
