Smyly went seven scoreless innings, trying to prove he still belong in the Detroit starting rotation in the 9-2 victory last night.

"I hope it showed everybody," Smyly told MLB.com. "To be honest, I'm kind of sick of the bullpen talk, that it's where I should go. I've been a starter my whole life. I went to the bullpen last year to help the team. I'd want to do whatever they want, but I've always thought of myself as a starter, and I think [Tigers personnel] all think of me as a starter. Hopefully that'll put the talk to rest."

The Royals are batting .172 while matching a season-high three-game slide.

"These things turn around quick. You look at Detroit's club and they are swinging the bats really good, all of them. They're hot right now," manager Ned Yost said. "They've got good pitching, which attributes to some of it. But we think we're a better offensive club than we've shown so far."

Now they will have to face former Cy Young and MVP winner in Verlander (3-1, 2.48 ERA). He went seven innings and allowed three runs in his last start in what ended up being a no decision.
