If you've never heard the phrase "bathed in sound," it's usually meant to imply a volume of layers in a mix so great that they are overpowering for the listener.
But there is another possible interpretation of "bathed in sound" that could be applied to "Now Say," the new single featuring Kirin, released on Nov. 2 by South Korean R&B quartet Cheeze. That is one of a sonic experience that makes one feel refreshed and replenished.
Consisting of vocalist Dalchong, rapper ?ASU and producers Moodi and Cloud, Cheeze have been creating soothing hip-hop infused sounds since 2013. Their minimalist mixing style and expansive beats enhanced with science fiction beeps and lush harmony are a poignant rejoinder to Hallyu's flamboyant flash.
But these four gifted artists are not looking to fade into the wallpaper.
A sharp vocal delivery from Dalchong, ?ASU and Kirin keeps the energy high on "Now Say" without beating you over the head. And though ?ASU's high-energy rap may feel like the song's only slightly off-key moment, it plays a valuable role in shaking the listener awake for some lovely Aliyah-meets-Janet Jackson vocalization from Dalchong.
With vocal talent at this level, there was no reason for the members of Cheeze to bring Kirin in. The fact that they did is testament to the work ethic of this band has that seems to continue to push their sound further.
And "Now Say" is proof of the kind of magic that can happen when a group is open enough to keep adding new elements to the mix.
