To the dismay of its legion of fans, "Gravity Falls" season 3 will no longer see the light of day.
This was confirmed by no less than the show's creator Alex Hirsch, who broke the news in a Tumblr post which he later on tweeted, according to Wired.
"Hey guys. 'Gravity Falls' has been an amazing journey, but the rumors are true- its reaching its finale #GravityFinale," Hirsch posted on his Twitter account.
Followers of the cult Disney XD series have long suspected that "Gravity Falls" might get the ax, but were still hopeful that the show's executives would still be convinced to do a season 3.
One of the final two episodes of the hit animated show, which was described by Hirsch as a "super-sized third-parter" aired less than a week ago, while the second part of the finale still has to be scheduled.
A spokesperson of Disney XD however announced that the last episode might be aired "sometime in 2016."
High-profile fans of the series, which included Guillermo Del Toro and Weird Al Yankovic, were pleased with the spokesman's announcement, but fans were still disappointed with Disney's decision to pull the plug on the show.
A major issue which confronted "Gravity Falls" was its "irregular" scheduling, which may have pushed Hirsch and company to scrap season 3.
After the first 12 episodes of "Gravity Falls" were released in the summer of 2012, the series was never aired regularly.
The first season of the series ran for 20 episodes and ended in August 2013. It took another year before the second season was finally rolled out.
And after the much-delayed release of "Gravity Falls" season 2, the show was moved from the Disney Channel to its older brother - Disney XD.
Meanwhile, Disney XD confirmed Hirsch's decision to do away with "Gravity Falls" season 3 despite the huge, cross-cutting fan base the show established during its three years of airing, according to Variety.
"Alex Hirsch had a masterful plan for the stories and characters of 'Gravity Falls' and, through 40 episodes and 17 shorts, he and a team of outstanding writers, artists and actors consistently delivered an inspired and unique story," Disney XD's statement read.
"Alex made the decision to conclude the story at this time, and while we're disappointed we all won't have the opportunity to explore more of the 'Gravity Falls' world, we respect his creative vision," the statement added.
Do you think that Disney will reconsider and still do "Gravity Falls" season 3?
