If Black Eyes Peas co-founder will.i.am tackled the origin story of hot female bodies with "I Got It from My Mama," then K-pop phenom Psy is reciprocating the gesture with his comeback single, "Daddy."
On Monday, the long-awaited comeback of the "Gentleman" arrived when two music videos for "Daddy" and "Napal Baji" premiered online. Observers immediately noticed the similarities between "Daddy" and will.i.am's 2007 single.
Allegedly, the homage is entirely intentional. It is speculated that the Black Eyed Peas rapper helped produce "Daddy," which was completed March of 2014. However, this theory remains unofficial, with the composers listed being Yoo Gun Hyun, longtime YG producer Teddy Park and Future Bounce.
"'Daddy' was completed March of last year," said Psy during a press conference in Seoul.
"Seven seasons have gone by and I'm not even Beethoven. I've made many changes and put in a lot of thought into it. But I made ['Napal Baji'] really quick after performing at a festival. I think it will be fun. One song was very difficult to make and the other wasn't. People often say that it is the easy-made songs that do well, but we'll have to see."
The influence would be entirely logical, given that will.i.am is a confirmed contributor for another track set to appear on Psy's seventh album, titled "ROCKnROLLbaby."
This is not the first time will.i.am has collaborated with K-pop idols. The producer became known in the genre when he took an interest in the Psy's labelmate 2NE1. The girl group worked with will.i.am in the recording studio on several occasions and was featured on his 2013 album "#willpower."
Earlier this year, 2NE1 frontwoman Lee "CL" Chaerin also recorded with members of Black Eyed Peas, presumably for their 20-year anniversary comeback or CL's American debut.
Psy's new album will feature additional collaborations from American pop icons like Ed Sheeran and Pharrell, as well as K-pop acts such as Zion.T, JYJ's XIA and Gaeko.
