Studio Ghibli has stolen the hearts of animation fans all over the world, and though it's star director is done making films, there's still plenty left for fans to experience.
In other words, there's still time to experience the magic in theaters if you've been subjected to special TV airings until now.
According to reports, animation distributor GKids is planning to screen the 1991 Studio Ghibli film "Only Yesterday" at in New York's IFC Center. While most animation fans may have come across the film in Japanese with subtitles, this planned screening will debut a new "Only Yesterday" English dub version. The film will open on January 1, 2016.
As one could expect, animation fans are expressing much excitement for the new theatrical release of "Only Yesterday."
"I saw this on Turner Classic Movies back in 2006! I know, because it was thanks to this airing that I really got into Studio Ghibli films. I can't wait to add this movie to my collection," said Survivinghorror on CR.
Crunchyroll reports that the new "Only Yesterday" English dub will star Daisy Ridley and Dev Patel and will get at an exclusive run at IFC for the month of January. Afterward, the film will expand to a nation-wide release on Feb. 26.
The "Only Yesterday" movie is directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, who is most known for his critically acclaimed films "Grave of the Fireflies" and Academy Award nominated film "The Tale of Princess Kaguya."
For those who are not familiar with "Only Yesterday," Anime News Network describes the story of the film as follows:
"Taeko Okajima is a typical "office lady" in a big company in a big city. When she takes a sabbatical to the countryside in Yamagata Prefecture, the hometown of her brother-in-law, the journey recalled her memory of her 5th grade year. During her stay in Yamagata, she works hard and happily as a farmer and is surrounded by friendly relatives and villagers, bringing up more memories. Their hospitality makes her to reconsider her choice of life."
