Whether it is entertainment or technology, South Korea's cultural content industry has been booming around the world.
In a report released by Yonhap News on Jan. 26, the Korean government stated that pop culture products were, and still is, the main reason why the exports of the country's content industry exceeded $5 billion in 2014.
What accounted for the majority of the total was the computer game industry where a 7.1 percent increase was made in 2014 compared to the previous year.
In addition to computer games in account, a statistical survey conducted by the Korean Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) and the culture ministry revealed music and characters were also the leading factors to the increase "although parts of the content industry such as publications, films and advertisements showed a moderate decline."
For a better understand of what the content industry is, Yonhap News states, "[it's] an umbrella term encompassing publishers, broadcasters, advertisers and firms producing music, computer games, animations, movies, musicals and other creative content."
Because of the global phenomenon of the Hallyu wave, the ministry and KOCCA the industry's exports maintained an average of 13.4 percent growth for five years since 2010.
