Pacific Rim: Maelstrom was scheduled to start filming in Toronto in November but changed, as the date for production has now been pushed all the way back into 2016. Pacific Rim 2 is definitely happening, director Guillermo Del Toro assured the fans.
According to Variety, the "Pacific Rim 2″ release date was already pushed from April 2, 2017, to August 4, 2017. Guillermo del Toro will return to direct the sequel. Latino Review reported that industry sources told them that 'Pacific Rim' is being postponed.
Del Toro said "Pacific Rim 2" will explore facets of the story that weren't explained in the first movie.
"It was hard to create a world that did not come from a comic book," del Toro told Buzzfeed. "That had its own mythology, so we had to sacrifice many aspects to be able to cram everything in the first movie. Namely, for example 'the Drift,' this was an interesting concept. [Then there was] this portal that ripped a hole into the fabric of our universe, what were the tools they were using? And we came up with a really, really interesting idea. I don't want to spoil it, but I think at the end of the second movie, people will find out that the two movies stand on their own.
"They're very different from each other, although hopefully bringing the same joyful giant spectacle. But the tenor of the two movies will be quite different."
Pacific Rim 2, also known as "Pacific Rim: Maelstorm", to hit cinemas by 2017.
