There is no mistaking it, GFriend are the breakout stars of 2016.
The six-member girl group has been sweeping network music shows for the past few weeks.
Beating out other artists from agencies such as JYP, SM, and YG Entertainment, GFriend have a total of 15 first place trophies from the major music programs for their latest single "Rough."
"Rough" is the title track from their third EP Snowflake, and was released on January 25, 2016.
"Rough" also set a new record by holding the number one position on the online music chart MelOn from Feb. 4 to 22. Along with this, it secured a "perfect all-kill" on Feb. 7, when it ranked number one on online music charts Mnet, Bugs, Olleh music, Soribada, Genie, Naver music, and Monkey3.
In a recent interview with the Korea Times, the group discussed their rising popularity..
"Every time we receive new trophies, we feel different," said Sowon. "We display them all on the display case at our company and we always stand in front of them looking at them."
"It just makes us so proud and we still can’t believe that our group name is engraved on the trophies," she added.
As for why they think fans are responding so well to their music, "We give off fresh charm and show healthy beauty," said Eunha. "The group gives energy to fans and we unite very well with the help of the staff working for us."
"Fans refer to our songs as ‘innocent and powerful,'" said Yuju. "We sing songs that are pure but have a powerful choreography to them. I guess that differentiates us from other girl bands."
GFriend is signed under Source Music, and made their debut with the EP Season of Glass in January 2015.
