Nene Leakes Exits 'Real Housewives Of Atlanta' For A New Primetime Series With A 'Big Legend'

Nene Leakes finally announced her exit from the hit BRAVO reality show "Real Housewives of Atlanta" after season 7.

The 47-year-old reality star who also appeared on "Glee" and "Dancing with the Stars" exclusively told PEOPLE the news.

"This was definitely a hard decision for me," Leakes told the publication. "Me and my husband [Gregg Leakes] have been going back and forth on it for weeks now. But my contract is up and I just think this is the right time. This is my opportunity to spread my wings and do different things."

And while she admittedly said that it's not easy for her to leave the show, her focus now is with new projects, most importantly a new primetime show together with a "big legend."

"I'm actually going to be doing a new primetime television show with a big legend," Leakes teased of her new show that will start production this week. "All of my fans will get to see me be really happy, witty and funny and tell all of those one liners that I always have said on Housewives."

And while she did not mention further details about her upcoming show, fans immediately speculated that it could be a comedy show based on her statement.

Going back to "Real Housewives of Atlanta," Nene Leakes also explained that she had enough of all the drama and too much negativity going on in the show.

"I feel a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders," Leakes said of her exit

"There were times when I was a target," she says. "I won't miss the negativity."

Furthermore, she claimed that her exit will probably make some of the cast members happy, since they've been thinking that she kept on taking away their chance to shine.

"I think some of the girls will be happy," Leakes explained. "They always felt like I was the star, and they were never able to really shine with me there, so here's their opportunity to shine."

However, she reminded everyone to not be too comfortable while she's gone, because she might still come back and appear in some episodes.

"I'm not saying I'm gone forever," Leakes teased. "I'll probably pop up and play with those girls every now and then."
