There won't be a "Goblin Season 2" or a Gong Yoo appearance in the planned "Train to Busan" sequel, but this doesn't mean that the actor won't have his hands full with projects. His management team recently teased what Gong Yoo fans should look forward to in the upcoming months.
According to a report by BitBag, Management Soop, who handles Gong Yoo's career, while no concrete plans have been mapped out for a follow up Korean drama, there are projects and endorsements in store for the Korean superstar. Management Soop hinted that his next project could be a movie, but it is unsure if it will be a drama or a horror film.
"Goblin: The Great and Lonely God" recently wrapped to strong ratings. In fact, despite the mixed reviews it received about the ending, the show successfully reached the 20 percent ratings mark, which is quite a rare feat on Korean television.
"Goblin's" strong performance also made fans wonder if there is going to be a sequel. While Gong Yoo was quite vocal after the success of his megablockbuster movie "Train To Busan" about wanting to be part of a sequel, the actor was quick to dispel rumors that "Goblin" will not have a second season.
Through his Twitter account, he confirmed that there will be no sequel and that its better for some stories to end as it is. The series ended on a bittersweet note with Eun Tak dying and Shin having to wait for another lifetime before his bride finds him again. While it was considered a happy ending by most, many were still heartbroken after the pair went through so much together only to be separated anew by death, a Drama Beans review stated.
"Goblin's" success was not just measured by ratings as the show inspired fashion trends. Oversized coats became a trend in Korea and other parts of Asia after fans tried to imitate the styles sported by Gong Yoo's Shin and Lee Dong Wook's Reaper on the show.
