From being dubbed as South Korea's "nation's little sister," multi-hyphenate Lee Ji Eun - more known by the mononym IU - furthers her artistic horizons in the Netflix original series "Persona" as she portrays four different characters.
Launched last April 11, the anthology series comprises four short films helmed by four different directors, namely Lee Kyung Mi, Im Pil Sung, Jeon Go Woon, and Kim Jong Kwan.
In Kyung Mi's "Love Set," IU battles it out against Bae Doona - who plays the role of IU's father's girlfriend - in the tennis court.
The 25-year-old artist then transforms into a mysterious woman who "disappeared to go traveling with her male friends" in Pil Sung's "Collector."
In the third film, Go Woon's "Kiss Burn," IU is seen taking on the role of a high school student who gets entangled in a dramatic tale of revenge as she offers help to her friend.
The fourth film is Jong Kwan's "Walking At Night." The final feature is a contemplative narrative pairing IU with a man whom she spends the night with ruminating about dreams, life, and death.
In an press conference promoting her film debut, IU shared that she accepted the offer thinking that the concept "was a fresh experiment."
"Four directors through their own interpretation created four different characters. And I had to play them in a fairly short period of time. I think this project will remain in my memory for a long time," she further added.
The Netflix series was originally slated for April 5 release. The premiere was postponed in light of the wildfires that engulfed various areas in the Gangwon province.
IU was last seen in the 2018 TVN drama series "My Mister," where she played a woman struggling and living a hard life.
The well-rounded Hallyu icon was launched in the Korean entertainment industry as a singer-songwriter who exuded a pure and innocent personality. In a span of more than a decade, she has widened her musical spectrum as she released more different-sounding tracks and collaborated with various artists like BIGBANG's G-Dragon.
Her hits songs include "Good Day," "You And I," "Palette," and "Bbibbi."
Prior to her lead role stint in "My Mister," she has showcased her acting chops in the hit series "Dream High," "Pretty Man," "You're The Best, Lee Soon-Shin," "The Producers," and "Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo."
She is also set to star in TVN's upcoming television series, "Hotel Del Luna."
