According to reports, famous celebrities, company CEO and other significant figures, including athletes, are said to be part of the most controversial "Nth Room" in Telegram.
Based on the press release of Korean media, 10,000 out of 260,000 members of the said chatroom, which became a platform for sex trafficking and abuse are already identified. However, the names of these personalities have not been revealed yet.
In addition to this, among the 10,000 identified members are said to be infamous names that are known in public, including celebrities, CEO and athletes, as well as influential people that are all paid members of the chatroom.
In the recent news, a member should pay first a huge sum before he can enter the chatroom and watch videos of minor females doing sexual activities wherein the amount of payment can rise up to 1.5 Million Won or approximately 1,190 US Dollars, depending on the type of chatroom a person will be entering.
"Baksa Chatroom", or most popularly known as "Nth Room" which is moderated by the perpetrator Jo Joo Bin, has three chatrooms, and the people who can enter these groups are all paid members. The amount of their payment will depend on the level of brutality and sexual pleasure they desire and the level of exposure of the minor kids.
These influential personalities used cryptocurrency, or a form of online payment through blockchain technology, which has a higher amount of exchange and uses secured transaction. The transaction hides the identity of the person, so they think that this is safer.
However, according to a cryptocurrency representative, it is much easier to determine the people using the technology since the receiver's identity can be seen in their crypto wallet, including the transaction they have and the wallet address." Therefore, if they send cash, it is much harder for the authority to identify them since they have a direct transaction with the main suspect.
In this sense, the Seoul Metropolitan Police will be working together with foreign IT experts and investigators and will be forming a special team for the "nth room" case.
Meanwhile, 124 people involved in the case were already arrested, and 18 people were previously imprisoned. Fans and celebrities, including Korean artists and idols, started a petition which already has 2 Million signs, demanding to reveal the name of every identity in the chatroom to be severely punished.
On the other hand, the identity of the main suspect was already revealed on the 24th, and his identity was disclosed as Jo Joo Bin. On the 25th, SBS media reveals a conversation with an SBS staff and Jo, threatening them that if they will be revealing anything about "Baksa room."
"One woman will jump or will be burning herself to death. No matter what kind of accident she will be in, I have notified you and save this as a proof."
Currently, Jo is under investigation as the identities of the other criminals and accomplices are yet to be revealed.
