After becoming one of the first Korean bands to talk freely about their support to the #BlackLivesMatter movement on their Twitter page, rookie group 2Z reportedly gained a considerable amount of new supporters and publicity.
But all of a sudden, the tables turned, and they are now being criticized after member Hyunwoong released a new song that featured George Floyd's final words "I Can't Breathe" just a few minutes before his tragic death.
Now, Twitter users are accusing the group of trying to take advantage of the movement to advance their fan-base without helping to learn the issue.
Netizens also aired their disgust on the social platform.
"I'm not asking the K-pop firm to call it again, but to make excuses?! Again frustrated but not shocked, this 2Z thing is rude and disrespectful, and they basically pour salt on an open wound."
"Lyrics says: "Black People What's the matter.
I like it black color so better
Yellow people What's the matter
I like it Yellow color so better.
Stop policer
Please help me stop policer
I don't want to die policer
Somebody help policer
No racism, no violence, we want peace."
"Holy crap 2z included the recording of George Floyd's arrest in their freestyle, which I will not even laugh at anymore."
Several people expressed their frustration and were in disbelief towards the track, and abruptly, the fans started unfollowing and unsubscribing the band on Twitter. Hyunwoung has since erased the song and explained himself on his Instagram account.
"I wanted to make it known to the world in other special ways. I was too excited, but I didn't mean anything bad. I am sorry. It's really my fault that there's a George Floyd sampling on the song.
Many people listened to his voice and joined the movement.
Since I was young, I love black people, hip hop, and basketball. I am reflecting on what I did. I am acknowledging my wrongdoings.
Sorry, I really respect and love the black community.
You can curse at me, but please don't do it a 2Z. I really wanted to love you guys and join you. But I was short-thinking. Again, I am deeply sorry."
The band also updated their joint Twitter page with an admission of guilt, and their agency also released a statement on the issue.
"Hello, this is 2Z's managing label.
First of all, the agency and the four other members of 2Z wanted to convey their deep regret at the content published on the personal SNS of Hyunwoong.
And because no one at the agency was notified of Hyunwoong's posting of its self-made music content shared on its personal SNS page, we feel extremely sorry and apologize for the delayed response.
We wholeheartedly bow and apologize to the people who got upset by the music of Hunwoong.
Hyunwoong regrets his tactless initiative himself and reflects on himself. We 're going to be wary of making anything like this happen again.
2Z will wrap things up their 2nd album activities this week, and then, we will offer you an official position on the appropriate course of action next week.
Thank you."
