While it gradually opens up to new kinds of societal expectations in the period of history, the Korean entertainment industry, even now, has a rather reduced view of the "standard" idol. For female artists, it's usually accepted to be slim, fair-skinned, have great eyes, small nose, and inherent qualities; while for males, tallness and powerful jawlines are generally "normal."
Obviously, it's far from the appearance of all celebrities, and there's no real concept of beauty because everyone has his or her unique attractions. Having said that, there's a variety of celebrities that are very distinct from the "typical" look of a star, but they're all comfortable with their own visuals. See the list below:
VICTON's HANSE
Hanse has no fear of showing his tattoos and piercings, which, in Korean culture, could be a bit rebellious. He also sports feminine clothing style but looks fabulous in this way
NU'EST's REN
Like Hanse, Ren has sometimes been recognized for being feminine, mainly when his hair grows out. He's unbelievably beautiful!
F(X)'s AMBER
Amber also has a great deal of tattoos, such as on her entire arm sleeve. She is among the few female tomboy stars in the K-pop industry that separates herself from the mainstream!
2AM's JO KWON
Jo Kwon dressed up a couple of times as a Drag Queen, and he killed it! He is a big LGBTQ+ supporter and does not fear sexier clothing. He slays in dance performances while wearing heels!
MAMAMOO's HWASA
MAMAMOO revealed in a show that she was once told by an agency that she "doesn't fit into this generation's beauty standard." And guess what? She went on and said, "Then I will have to become a different standard." Now, she is one of the most lauded singers today for her beauty and jaw-dropping physique!
BIGBANG's G-DRAGON
G-Dragon can smoothly pull out just about any fashion. He can become very masculine and has also known to wear more androgynous or women's appearance and, therefore, he is not scared to try lipstick, nails, and other jewelry.
HYOLYN
Hyolyn not only has several large tattoos that she's not really ashamed to openly display, but she also has a gorgeous sun-kissed beauty unline the ones we see regularly.
SEVENTEEN's WOOZI
While Woozi may be on the shorter side, with respect to K-pop stars, he has literally torn incredibly (he can pick up other SEVENTEEN participants seamlessly!), and he has a powerful masculine power when he chooses to.
MAMAMOO's MOONBYUL
Although the physical photographs of Moonbyul are very traditionally feminine, she also wears suits and much more "masculine" clothes, which she pulls off everytime.
SUPER JUNIOR's SHINDONG
While Shindong recently started working quite hard to lose weight for health reasons, he has been heavier than the standard masculine idol almost all of his years, but his skills and abilities make him admirable.
