There are K-pop idol groups that are lucky enough to be treated fairly by their agencies. However, there are still some companies that act shady and shitty towards their artists. In the end, the idol groups either get disbanded or heartbreakingly suffer in silence.
Here are some of the male K-pop idol groups who were mistreated and ruined by their companies:
A-JAX
A-Jax was with D.S.P. Media. After their debut, the group was doing great, so the company treated them better. However, the agency just left them hanging without any plans for comeback and promotions for the past four years.
Z.E.:A Star Empire Entertainment
Z.E.:A, a group under Star Empire Entertainment, was also left to rot. Without any comebacks for the past three years, their fandom is declining, and so is their name.
X1
X1 was formed through the Produce X 101 series. However, after the controversial vote-rigging scandal, X1 was forced to disband by each member's company. The group didn't even get to have a say about the decision. It's not like they were the ones who paid the show to manipulate the audiences' votes.
Although the C.E.O. of Swing Entertainment Cho Yoo Myeong tried to appeal for the group and asked the other agencies to let the members join the meeting, his plea was denied.
"I'd be honest, one member called me yesterday and said that all X1 members want to participate in the meeting, so informed all the company representatives that it'd be better to have the group attend the conference," the C.E.O. once shared.
However, the other agencies said that since they're the only ones who need to make the decision, the members' opinions are of no use. So during the meeting, voting took place on whether the group could continue or not. With a 4-4 vote and one disqualified vote, they ended up disbanding the group.
MADTOWN
MADTOWN's original agency was J. Tune Camp; however, it sold all its management rights and contracts to G.N.I. Entertainment in 2016. After the turnover, MADTOWN was greatly affected. The group member, Jota, later on, revealed that the G.N.I mistreated them. They weren't provided cars for their transportations, and they had to pick up the staff and buy their meals without compensation. Worse, G.N.I. didn't even pay for their dormitory rentals.
In 2017, MADTOWN sued G.N.I. Entertainment after the C.E.O. was arrested for fraud.
B.A.P.
Another group that sued their agency was B.A.P. They went to court against T.S. Entertainment. They shared that the company didn't treat them well and wasn't even paying them properly.
The group's leader, Yongguk, later said, "I didn't complain about the pay, but the lawsuit cost too much. I had to sell my things to pay off the lawyers and fees. I also went back home with my parents and got a part-time job in a newspaper company I used to work in high school. The owner didn't know what happened and asked why a celebrity would want to deliver newspapers. I just shrugged it off and joked that I didn't have any promotions at the moment."
Topp Dogg
Topp Dogg's Gohn and Kidoh filed lawsuits against Stardom Entertainment due to the agency's mismanagement of their careers. P-Goon, the group's leader, also sued the company's C.E.O. for allegedly stealing $250,000 from the Topp Dogg's hard-earned money.
NU'EST
One of the most controversial idol group mistreatment, the NU'EST boys were even seen traveling by public transportation to their concert venues. They also had overlapping schedules and were asked to participate in the Produce X 101 series as trainees.
BOYFRIEND
BOYFRIEND was a group handled by Starship Entertainment. One of the members, Jeongmin, shared that he was allowed to write and produce songs, but it was all given to MONSTA X.
