On Thursday, Nov. 26, GQ Korea released its pictorial and interview with soloist IU. During the interview, IU opened up about her experience and life with insomnia. Read more about it here.
Recently, IU was chosen as GQ Korea's "Woman of the Year." To commemorate her title, the magazine released a pictorial and interview with the solo singer and actress. In the interview, the reporter mentioned the 12th-anniversary concert IU had through the show "Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook." It was then mentioned that her song, "Knees," talks about the struggles of an adult who cannot sleep at night.
IU talked about her insomnia. She revealed that her body is always on guard, which causes her to toss and turn at night instead of having a peaceful sleep.
She said:
"It appears that the reason why I toss and turn every night is because I am always on guard against something. This is the simple explanation for the reason why I have insomnia that the hospital told me. That is why I cannot sleep at night; because I am always on guard."
IU continued, saying that she only sleeps well one out of three nights and that the night before her interview with GQ, she had slept well. She added that her insomnia gets worse when the seasons change. IU explained that even if she gets good sleep in the summer, her insomnia can immediately worsen once the seasons shift to autumn. Even during the days she exercises a lot or spends a lot of time outdoors, she struggles to sleep at night.
IU also revealed that she has been struggling with insomnia ever since she was 20 years old. She confessed that she suddenly became really busy at that young age, which ruined her sleep patterns. She explained that there was a point in her life where she always had to be on standby. Since it is harder to wake up if in a deep sleep, her body naturally started being on guard.
IU explained in detail, saying:
"If I think about it in simple terms, I think that I suddenly became swamped, and my sleep pattern ended up being ruined. It was at a point in my life where I had to practically always be on standby to be ready to work as soon as I woke up. It is harder to wake up if you fall into a deep sleep. Because of that, I think my body naturally became on guard against falling into a deep sleep."
However, IU reassured fans that nowadays, she is living a steadier and healthier routine. During the times she is not promoting an album, IU can get the rest she needs. She also shared that she tried to wake up by 9:00 A.M. or 10:00 P.M. when she's not promoting. IU tries to get everything she needs to be done in the morning and heads to bed by midnight.
This is quite an improvement for IU, who revealed that in the past, she used to always wake up at around 2:00 P.M.
In the interview, IU revealed that she is planning to release an album by next year. Are you excited for a potential IU comeback?
