LOONA has officially entered a popular radio chart in the United States with their latest English song, "Star"!
According to Blockberry Creative on Jan. 27, their girl group, LOONA, has debuted on this week's "Top 40 Mediabase Pop Radio Airplay Chart." Mediabase monitors more than 180 radio broadcasts in the US and Canada for 24 hours and counts the number of playbacks of songs by artists from all over the world. Meanwhile, the chart ranks the most popular songs on North American radio channels.
Based on this week's top 40 on the U.S. pop radio chart, LOONA's "Star" is at No. 39 with a total of 671 spins during the Jan. 17-23 tracking period. The song rises three spots after being at No. 42 last week with 298 spins.
LOONA Becomes the Second K-pop Girl Group to enter the "Top 40 U.S. Pop Radio Chart"
"Star" is LOONA's first entry in the "Top 40 Mediabase Pop Radio Airplay Chart." And what makes this achievement more worth noting is that LOONA becomes the second K-pop girl group in history to make it to the top 40 after BLACKPINK whose collaboration with Selena Gomez, "Ice Cream," landed on the top 20. Moreover, LOONA is the first act to reach the milestone with a solo single.
Blockberry Creative's all-female band now joins three of the biggest Korean acts: BLACKPINK, BTS, and MONSTA X as the only K-pop groups to make it to the top 40 of the U.S. pop radio chart. And this is a very special feat since their fans, known as ORBITs, were the inspiration for the song. It is said that the lyrics of LOONA's "Star" refer to their fans when the members sing about their "starlight." Additionally, the stars are seen in the music video for the song also represent ORBITs.
LOONA Comments on Their Major U.S. Radio Chart Achievement
In an interview with Teen Vogue, LOONA's Yves commented on their major milestone by expressing her gratitude and joy to their fans who may be far away but was still able to give them a present. She also gave thanks to their management agency by saying, "I believe that this happened because of all the efforts from Blockberry Creative staff and all those who worked hard for us, as well as the passion of our members, and ORBITs from all around the world."
LOONA's JinSoul also shared her thoughts by confessing that the news took her and her bandmates by surprise. She added, "We are very honored for this milestone. We will continue to do our very best to give back all the love and support we receive."
LOONA's English Song "Star" and Third Mini-Album
Released on Nov. 18, 2020, "Star" is the English version of the B-side track "Voice" from LOONA's third mini-album titled "12:00 (also read as midnight)." It is described as an energetic retro song that talks and its music video tells the story of chasing their dream with their fans lighting the right way.
Meanwhile, LOONA's third mini-album, "12:00 (also read as midnight)," came out one month ahead. It debuted at No. 112 on the Billboard 200, making the band the first independent girl group to enter one of the main charts in the U.S.
Congratulations, LOONA!
