Dispatch Selects the Top 8 Female K-Pop Soloists

On Wednesday, May 26, Dispatch selected the top female K-pop soloists and shared their choices on their Instagram, @koreadispatch.

1. IU

IU debuted as a soloist in 2008 but found fame in 2008 with her song "Good Day." Due to the success of her earlier albums, she is known as "The Nation's Little Sister," as well as "The Nation's Sweetheart."

Despite deviating from her little sister image, IU retains her dominance on the charts, making her one of the most successful K-pop soloists.

2. HyunA

HyunA originally debuted as a Wonder Girls member in 2007 but left that same year due to health issues. She then debuted in 4Minute in 2009.

In 2010, HyunA debuted as a soloist and was famous for her sexy, performance-oriented music. She is the first K-pop soloist to have a music video surpass 100 million YouTube views.

3. Sunmi

Sunmi originally debuted as a member of the Wonder Girls in 2007 and temporarily left the group in 2010, returning in 2015.

In 2013, Sunmi debuted as a soloist with "Full Moon." Sunmi focuses on her own genre called "Sunmi-pop," to which Sunmi stated that there is always a slight sad emotion to her music no matter how upbeat it is.

Sunmi-pop often makes use of pop, rock, jazz, EDM, traditional Korean music, retro, and city pop elements.

4. Girls' Generation's Taeyeon

Taeyeon debuted as the leader of Girls' Generation in 2007 and made her solo debut in 2015. Taeyeon is one of the best-selling soloists in South Korea, having sold over one million physical albums and twenty million digital singles.

5. Chungha

Chungha debuted as a member of I.O.I in 2016 after competing in Mnet's "Produce 101 Season 1."

Following I.O.I's disbandment, Chungha debuted as a soloist in 2017. The idol is known for her impressive vocals, and her sharp dance lines, often dubbed as one of K-pop's "dancing machines."

6. BoA

Would this list be complete without BoA? Known as the "Queen of K-Pop," BoA debuted in 2000 at just thirteen years old. BoA is credited for spreading the Hallyu Wave to other parts of Asia, such as China, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan.

BoA is the first Korean singer to break through the Japanese market and is the only non-Japanese artist to have three albums sell more than a million copies in the country.

7. Jeon Somi

Somi is another former member of I.O.I on this list. Following the group's disbandment, she left her original company JYP Entertainment and signed with The Black Label.

Somi made her debut as a soloist in 2019 with "BIRTHDAY." Jeon Somi is known for her high-spirits and spunky personality, which fans love!

8. Kim Sejeong

Kim Sejeong is another former I.O.I member and the last idol to be mentioned. She had also made her debut with Gugudan in 2016.

That same year, she debuted as a soloist.

Kim Sejeong is known for her golden vocals, with many praising her voice in ballads and vocal-heavy tracks.
