On December 8, Guinness World Records announced the celebrities who broke records this year. The list contained several K-pop artists who achieved significant milestones. Here are all the K-pop idols who broke Guinness World Records in 2021.
1. BTS
In 2021, BTS broke the records for the most Twitter engagement — in terms of average retweets — for a music group. BTS has previously broken this record four times in the past. Guinness World record states that they will undoubtedly improve on this record and will most likely break it again.
In May 2021, "Butter" broke the record for the most viewers for the premiere of a video on YouTube. During its premiere, there was a peak of 3.9 million concurrent viewers. Additionally, "Butter" broke the record for the most viewers for the premiere of a music video on YouTube.
"Butter" broke the record for the most-viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours, amassing 108,200,000 views. The boy group also broke the record for the most-viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a K-pop group.
When the single dropped on Spotify, "Butter" garnered 11,042,335 global streams in one day, breaking the record for the most-streamed song on Spotify in the first 24 hours.
In April 2021, BTS broke the record for the most-streamed act on Spotify (group). "Dynamite" and "Boy With Luv (feat. Halsey)" are their most streamed songs. That same month, BTS broke the record at number one on Billboard's Digital Song Sales chart for the most weeks.
The boy group holds 23 record titles and was inducted into the Guinness World Records Hall of Fame in 2021.
2. NCT Taeil
In July 2021, NCT member Taeil broke the record for the fastest time to reach one million followers on Instagram. When he announced his Instagram account, @mo.on_air, to Bubble, fans immediately flocked to the social media platform to follow his account. His account reached seven digits worth of followers in just one hour and 45 minutes.
Taeil gave a statement to Guinness World Record concerning his achievement, thanking the fans and expressing his show upon hearing the news. Taeil stated that he never imagined he would be a Guinness World Records title holder and stated he would not achieve this feat with his members and NCTzens.
He said, "I will try my best to connect and communicate even more through social media. I love you all!"
3. BLACKPINK Rosé
In March 2021, BLACKPINK member Rosé debuted as a soloist. Following the release of "On The Ground," the music video broke the record for the most-viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a K-pop soloist, amassing 41.6 million views.
The idol also topped the Billboard Global 200 and the Global Excl. U.S. with "On The Ground." As BLACKPINK had previously topped the latter chart with "Lovesick Girls" in 2020, Rosé became the first singer to reach number one on a Billboard Global chart as a member of a group and a soloist.
4. BLACKPINK Lisa
BLACKPINK member Lisa debuted as a soloist in September 2021. Upon the release of the music video for "LALISA," Lisa broke Rosé's record and claimed the record of the most-viewed YouTube music video by a K-pop solo artist in 24 hours. The music video garnered 73.6 million views at that time.
The music video for "LALISA" also broke the record for the most-viewed YouTube music video by a soloist in 24 hours. The BLACKPINK member broke Taylor Swift's record for "Me!." which garnered 65.2 million views in the first 24 hours when it was first released in April 2019.
