Square Enix Update, 'Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13' To Use Wardrobe Battle System, The Future Of Final Fantasy To Be Addressed At E3 [VIDEO]

Square Enix has divulged more news on its long-running "Final Fantasy" franchise, including the release dates for "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13" and a panel during E3 mysteriously titled "The Future of Final Fantasy."

"Lightning Returns" is the third and final entry in the "Final Fantasy XIII" trilogy, which began with "Final Fantasy XIII" in 2009 and "Final Fantasy XIII-2" two years later.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 release will first land in Japan on November 21 of this year, with a North American release on February 11 of next year, and February 14 release for Europe, reports Kotaku.

In addition, the game will reportedly use a costume/wardrobe battle system reminiscent of "Final Fantasy X-2," reports Polygon.

"As Lightning is the only playable character in the third 'Final Fantasy 13' game, it's up to her diverse, flamboyant attire to fill out the roles of her allies in battle," noted Polygon contributor Michael McWhertor after testing out a brief demo for the title.

With the PS4 and Xbox One planned for end-of-the-year releases and no promises on backwards-compatibility, the later-than-predicted American and European dates could be a detriment to Square Enix's profits.

In addition, Square Enix will hold a special pre-E3 event on June 11 titled "The Future of Final Fantasy," reports Destructoid.

The 1-hour event will reportedly feature a presentation, followed by a Q&A session with senior vice-president and brand director Shinji Hashimoto.

Hashimoto's name might seem familiar to "Final Fantasy" fans, as he also announced that a "Final Fantasy" title was in the works for PS4 in February.

With the long-awaited "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" missing from Square Enix's official line-up for E3, perhaps we will get more news on its development during the event.

Stay tuned for Square Enix and "Final Fantasy" updates as E3 arrives.
