Oscar Pistorius Trial Update: A Week In Review From Athlete’s Pre-Trial Appearance At Court To Magistrate’s ‘Trial By Media’ Comment [RECAP]

At 7:55 a.m. early this Tuesday, Oscar Pistorius, charged for the February 14 murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, walks into court.

According to Sky News, the Olympian and Paralympian athlete is looking “pretty fit and quite controlled.” BBC News Andrew Harding says there is “no obvious change in his appearance since February, apart from lack of emotion.”

This was his first appearance at court since he was freed on bail last February 22.

A few days before his Tuesday pre-trial appearance, Sky News leaked images of the bloody bathroom where Oscar Pistorius shot Reeva.

It showed the pool of blood near the toilet and a bullet-riddled door.

The former detective at the center of the murder investigation, Hilton Botha, said that the Blade Runner could go free because of the pictures.

In another interview, with Vanity Fair magazine, he said he’s convinced that Reeva Steenkamp’s murder was pre-meditated and intentional.

Monday night, Channel 5 in the UK showed the documentary, “Why Did Oscar Pistorius Kill Our Daughter?” where June Steenkamp, Reeva’s mom, revealed a painting made by her daughter Reeva when she was 14-years-old.

The painting has a gunman in a field and an angel on a stairway. June Steenkamp says that the eccentric painting, whose meaning they do not understand, was a chilling premonition of their daughter.

They claimed she predicted how she would die.

Mrs. Steenkamp also spoke of her desperation for answers, "Why? Why did he shoot her? I want to know why he shot her. Because she must have been so afraid in the toilet, and somebody's firing [a] gun, bullets through the door,” she said.

The day before the hearings, Oscar Pistorius’ family said that they “fully stand behind” the athlete.

"We believe in him, love him and will support him every step of the way in what lies ahead," Arnold Pistorius, Oscar’s uncle said.

At 8:13 a.m. at the courthouse, Tuesday, South African Magistrate Daniel Thulare expressed his concerns about some of the media reports on the athlete.

He said he is worried that the Paralympian will have “trial by media.” The comments according to some were fueled by the Sky News leaked images and the documentary featuring Reeva’s parents.

Prosecutor Andrea Johnson agrees that Pistorius should be treated like any other person, which was agreed upon by the runner’s defense lawyer, Barry Roux.

Thirteen-minutes into the pre-trial hearing, the magistrate addressed Oscar Pistorius and tells him he must attend court on August 19, warning that failure to attend might lead to warrant of arrest being issued.

Pistorius replied, “Yes, sir.” The only words the athlete has spoken all throughout his brief appearance.

Two minutes later the court was adjourned and Pistorius leaves the court. He was there for fifteen minutes.

According to reports, the August 19 trial date would have marked the 30th birthday of Reeva Steenkamp has she been not shot.

Pistorius, from the very beginning has been consistent with his story that she mistook his girlfriend for a burglar.

Many expect that the murder trial will be move again, as prosecutors will request for more to investigate, and will not happen until early 2014.
