Four Boy Scouts Rescued, Man Found Dead In Arizona/Nevada Desert Near Lake Mead: Boys Were 'Very Brave' While Missing

A man from Las Vegas, NV died and four Boy Scouts and another visitor were rescued this weekend.

The group was on an ill-fated trip in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area that turned deadly. The Boy Scout troop got lost in the desert and called for help. Officials rescued them, but by then Clawson Bowman Jr., 69, was dead.

Temperatures were soaring above 110 degrees, officials said. Bowman was found about a mile from White Rock Canyon along the Nevada-Arizona border near Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon.

Bowman had been suffering from heatstroke, leading to his death. A second unidentified man was airlifted from the area, also suffering from heatstroke - but he made it out alive.

The Scout troop stayed on the phone with officials during the search. They were missing and lost for about four hours before the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department found them. They were treated by paramedics and also airlifted from the area.

"The boys were very brave this afternoon as they tried to explain their location to our dispatchers," park spokeswoman Christie Vanover said in a statement.

Officials were warning against hiking in the park due to excessive heat. Bowman's death will be further investigated by the Mohave County (Ariz.) Medical Examiner to determine the official cause.
