Apple WWDC 2013: iOS 7 Features Transluscent Controls, Updated Safari App And New Voice Of Siri In Major Overhaul

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Apple Head of Software Engineering Craig Federighi took the stage at the Apple WWDC 2013 to discuss the newest feature of the much awaited and rumored iOS 7.

Throwing statistics that continued to prove the dominance of Apple in the mobile market, Cook said that the company has now sold more than 600 million iOS-based devices.

He cited a JD Powers Study that indicated that iPhone owners use their phone 50% more than the users of Google’s Android. “Now, this is incredible, but it’s not necessarily surprising,” he added.

He also noted that 93% of iPhone users are on the latest version of the software, or iOS 6, while Android suffers, he claims, from what is called “version fragmentation,” reports Tiernan Ray of Barron’s.

The new version of the iOS 7, designed by Jonathan Ives, is deemed by Cook as the “biggest change to iOS since the introduction of iOS.”

Apple’s head of software engineering, Craig Federighi gave the demo of the much awaited and talked about iOS 7.

True to rumors, the new look of the software is stripped down, and removes the traditional textures of wood and leather feel in the old user interface (UI).

There’s a new lock screen: You slide up to unlock and everything is much flatter.

A slide up drawer brings up setting toggles and a volume slider, as reported by Greg Kumparak of Tech Crunch, and the keyboard is now transluscent, showing the content behind it.

The new iOS 7 will also make multitasking available for all applications, enabling frequently used programs to have ongoing ‘cycles’ background processing. A new featured called “opportunistic updates” will automatically kick-in when the device gets a high wi-fi signal.

The new Safari will have a full-screen view, a three-dimensional view of open tabs similar to the old “cover flow” view of music in the iPod, as described by Barrons. It will also have a unified search field and a more dynamic bookmarking feature.

In what could be the most enchanting feature of the iOS 7 is the new voice of Siri - it now sounds more human.

The WWDC is Apple’s annual gathering of developers who code apps for the company’s platforms. It will be held in San Francisco from June 10-14. On it’s website, Apple describes that the WWDC is where you can learn how to take your apps to the next level.

The five-day confab draws more than 5,000 developers is usually a showcase of Apple’s software.
