In online communities, TREASURE Jihoon's remark about going to a pet store became controversial. What happened?
Here's the full story.
TREASURE Jihoon Garners Divided Opinions For Going To Pet Store For THIS Reason
TREASURE Jihoon took to Weverse to communicate with fans, but his remark about pets sparked discussions among netizens.
On Nov. 25, the male idol left comments on the idol-fandom-communicating platform, saying:
"I went to a pet shop because I thought I would die if I didn't see a cute animal today.
I met a legendary cat and a legendary Shiba dog there."
He added:
"All the stress and worries in my life disappeared, but when I came out of the pet shop, it came back again.
Oh, and I'm trying to persuade my mom to raise a cat or a dog in my house by sending her a video."
Initially, fans found it cute that the 22-year-old idol shared his thoughts and plan comfortably through SNS. Fans are also rooting for him and hoped his mother would agree for him to raise a pet.
However, when the remarks spread through various online communities, people criticized the idol and called him "tactless."
- "You go to a pet shop to see animals?"
- "You are just asking your mother to raise your pet without actually raising them."
- "You speak too lightly about raising pets."
- "Why spend money to have a pet, you should go to a shelter instead and adopt."
- "All defending him here were also ignorant about this issue."
Although Jihoon didn't specifically imply that he would get a pet from a pet shop he visited, people raised their brows that the idol seems to be not aware of the "Adopt, Don't Shop" movement being pushed due to the increasing number of animals being abandoned and the expansion of animal factories to meet the demand in pet stores.
Jihoon also talked about Shiba, which is a dog with a breed. He drew greater criticism for his remarks on the October 29, saying:
"If conditions do not work, you should not rationalize yourself and raise (a pet)."
Eventually, the idol deleted his comments, apparently aware of the situation.
On the flip side, there are fans who felt bad for the flak Jihoon got and said:
- "If he doesn't know, you can just tell him."
- "The malicious comments are worse than what he did."
- "There are many idols who raise breed dogs, but they curse (Jihoon) too much."
