Facebook Catches Up To Twitter: Hashtags Makes Its Way To The Social Media Giant

For some time now, the feature of hashtags has been available on platforms like Twitter and Instagram, and Facebook has finally joined the party.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Facebook users will now be able to see what others are saying about the conversation in the hashtag by clicking on the hashtag, which also include hashtags added from platforms like Twitter or Instagram.

According to LA Times, the feature will also be available when users use to the search bar, and trending hashtags will be visible to all. Hashtags from up to three weeks prior will be clickable.

"To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what's happening or what people are talking about," said Facebook product manager Greg Lindley in an official blog post.

"To bring these conversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics.

"As a first step, we are beginning to roll out hashtags on Facebook. Hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations. We'll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world's conversations."

With reportedly 655 million active daily users compared Twitter's 200 million, Facebook's latest move can be seen as a marketing tool for the platform to compete with other portals for live online discussions.
