Weather Channel Mayhem: U.S. Midwest Braces For Severe Storms From Tornadoes To Hail, Derecho Formation Strong Possibility

U.S. residents in the Midwest should pay close attention to the weather channel in the coming days, as a low pressure cold front yesterday will most likely trigger significant storms that could produce tornadoes, hail, lightning storms, and strong winds up to 80 miles an hour.

According to Earth Sky, The Storm Prediction Center has issues high risk for severe thunderstorms in portions of Iowa, northern Illinois and Indiana, and northwestern Ohio. The warning covers more than 12 million residents in these regions.

Resident in cities like, Columbus, Chicago, and Fort Wayne are being warned to prepare for the severe wind threat and any potential damage that may come as a result.

As of now, tens of thousands in from Iowa to Indiana have lost power, with storm damage reported throughout.

"We're just happy that we don't have reports of injuries or fatalities," said Stephanie Bond of Iowa Homeland Sceurity and Emergence Management to Yahoo! News.

"We just hope the extent of the damage is minimal."

The biggest cause for concern is the prediction that the storms could potentially turn into a derecho, a violent storm system that produces widespread wind damage over a large area involving thunderstorms and rapidly moving showers.

Derechos are capable of reaching 240 miles in diameter. The previous derecho last year caused at least $1 billion in damage in areas like Chicago and Washington. 13 people were killed and more than 4 million lost power.

While predictions are still early, the cold front will continue to push through south and east, potentially reaching the Mid-Atlantic.

Resident are being advised to bring in any outdoor furniture or potential flying objects.

Stay safe.
