After appearing with no makeup, SHINee Onew garnered mixed reactions from K-Netz which was immediately addressed by Shawols.
SHINee Onew Flaunts No-Makeup Look On His Way To 'Music Bank'– Why Is He Criticized?
On March 17, various media outlets and K-pop fandoms flocked to the KBS building in Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul to greet numerous K-pop idols who will attend the rehearsal and filming for KBS's music show, "Music Bank" to be held on the same day.
At the time, second-gen to fourth-gen idols such as SHINee Onew, KARA Nicole, EXO Kai, TWICE, Yuju, Golden Child Y, Cherry Bullet, CRAVITY and more appeared, greeting fans and journalists by participating in a mini photo time on their way to work.
When their real-time photos and videos were released, one idol particularly stood out for his visuals, which drew divided opinions for his shocking no-makeup look.
Who is it? It's not other than SHINee Onew!
On this day, Onew who released his first full-length album, "Circle" on March 6 continued his promotion in South Korea through music program appearances. While most idols usually dress up on their way to such programs, the male idol confidently showed off his no-makeup look.
While a lot was impressed by his confidence and natural beauty, some internet users expressed their dissatisfaction and concerns after seeing him.
They criticized the "Dice" singer for his "older" appearance pointing out the lines under his eyes and mouth.
Netters who saw his appearance left comments such as:
- "Why don't you check him out? Why did he go like this all of a sudden?"
- "Have you been drinking and smoking?"
- "I'd believe anyone who will tell me this is a 'homeless' man."
- "Did you have an extreme diet?"
- "Why aren't you taking care of yourself?"
Shawols Defend SHINee Onew From Malicious Commenters Following No-Makeup Appearance
After being criticized in online communities, SHINee World/Shawols (fandom) took to social media platforms to defend Onew.
Fans initially explained that the photos and videos were taken when the male idol was not in his best condition. Rather than having a drastic change in his appearance, Shawols stated that Onew was visibly tired as he just returned from Japan after holding his "O-NEW-NOTE" concert for two days on March 13 and 15.
Without much rest, he continued his solo schedules in Korea, not to mention that he was also in preparation for SHINee's much-awaited comeback with Taemin in May.
Fans also attested that Onew's no-makeup look in his best condition is surely top-tier, to the point you can't even tell he's already 33 years old! In fact, when he appeared in the broadcast proper of "Music Bank," the "Caramel" singer stood out for his beauty like he was back in his 20s, charming viewers with his healing voice and eye-catching look.
Some internet users also criticized those who attacked Onew's "older" appearance, stating that aging is normal and it is not a shocking thing. Rather, the idol should receive applause for his confidence and braveness for showing that idols are also ordinary people who get wrinkles, gets tired and don't have to look their best at all times.
Other K-pop fandoms are then praising Shawols claiming that they also played a huge role in why Onew was comfortable showing his raw side to them because they already accepted all sides of him.
