Apple iPhone 6 May Have 'Kill Switch', More Colors, Bigger Screen: Low-Cost iPhone 'Mini' Price

Rumors have long swirled that Apple is considering a bigger, cheaper iPhone for the iPhone 6 or 5S. Now, a host of (still-rumored) details are emerging about a larger screen, more colors, parts for the low-cost iPhone shipping, and possible iPhone 6 release date and prices.

First, the iPhone 6 might have a much bigger screen than the iPhone 5. One prediction is for 5.7 inch screen, making it a Phablet. The release date for the iPhone 6 is likely to be in 2014.

The rumored lower-cost iPhone 5S or "iPhone Mini" is likely to have a September launch date. It would have a 4.7 inch screen. And the price point is likely to be lower - a new report says that Apple's latest creation will be just $99. The low-cost iPhone might ship unlocked without contract.

Second, the China Times reports that many suppliers have shipped out parts for the rumored low-cost iPhone. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has now shipped 28-nanometer processors for the iPhone 6 or 5S. And Largan Precision has shipped its 8-megapixel camera. Many other manufacturers such as Chipbond and Texas Instruments are supposedly providing parts for the device.

Another rumor says that the "iPhone Mini", or low-cost iPhone, might come in a plethora of different colors. Analyst Bryan White, who specializes in Apple products, thinks that it will be five colors for the new iPhone.  White predicts that four of the colors will white, black, pink, and blue. No word on what the fifth color will be - but the color palette so far for the new iPhone Mini doesn't exactly seem to be a rainbow of iMac candy-hued throwback shades.

Apple themselves said they plan on adding a "kill switch" to iPhones in hopes of cutting down on theft. This detail isn't only a rumor - and lawmakers are applauding the move.

Interestingly, the iOS7, whatever the other specs entail, will contain a feature known as Activation Lock. An Apple ID and a password will now be required in order to turn off the "Find My Phone" feature or erase any data the phone may contain.

"Apple picking", or theft of iPhones or iPads, is a growing issue. At the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi told the audience that the "kill switch" will help prevent stolen iPhones.
