Amid popular of FIFTY FIFTY's "Cupid," a singer took to Instagram and indirectly accused the K-pop girl group of plagiarizing his song. What really happened?

Turkish Singer Points Out Song's Similarities To FIFTY FIFTY's Hit 'Cupid'

On Instagram, the Turkish singer Evrencan Gündüz personally questioned the group FIFTY FIFTY's "Cupid" sound resemblance to his song, "Sen Aşkımızdan."

On April 26, the singer garnered attention from K-pop enthusiasts and netters after writing:

"FIFTY FIFTY made a great song. Let's listen to it together. However, it sounds familiar from somewhere."

In the video he uploaded as well, he recorded himself jamming to the girl group's song which naturally transitions to his song. He implied that the two songs have uncanny similarities and since "Sen Aşkımızdan" was earlier released in 2017, it was interpreted that Evrencan was indirectly accusing the quartet of referencing the song, despite his cheerful reaction.

Immediately after the post, music fans especially supporters of FIFTY FIFTY defended the quartet stating that the resemblance was "too little" and that it couldn't be considered "plagiarism." Fans also attested that they don't sound the same anymore after the introduction. Thus, people are emphasizing that it could be just a mere coincidence.

However, fans of Evrencan Gündüz raised their brows against them and avowed that if weren't for the language, they wouldn't notice that he's actually playing two different songs. His fellow singer Duygu Soylu also agreed, saying:

"Even the tone is the same."

Meanwhile, FIFTY FIFTY's "Cupid" is currently gaining global popularity by entering the U.S. Billboard "Hot 100," the first girl group from a non-"BIG4" K-pop company to do so.

However, amid its fame, some Internet users have raised suspicions of plagiarism over "Cupid." In fact, this is not the first time that people claimed that the song was plagiarized. Others are saying that it is also similar to Mina Okabe's "walk away" in 2021, and "Better Days" by Neiked, Mae Muller and Polo G in 2022.

Is 'Cupid' Plagiarized? Music Expert, FIFTY FIFTY Agency's Release Position

Amid the debate, a Korean media outlet decided to consult with a music expert about the speculated plagiarism, but the professional only said:

"It's similar if you break it down, but I don't think this will be enough to argue (with plagiarism)."

In a related development, an official from FIFTY FIFTY's agency ATTRAKT said in a phone call with WikiTree:

"We are contacting the original author (composer) of Cupid to confirm."

"Cupid" composers include Adam Von Mentzer, Mac Felländer-Tsai, and Louise Udin, all from overseas. The agency's official position will be announced later.

On the other hand, FIFTY FIFTY, a girl group who "miraculously" rose to popularity despite coming from a small company, established its position after its hit track, "Cupid" became a viral TikTok challenge.

With their impact globally particularly in the US, it was reported that the quartet signed a partnership with Warner Records, a large U.S. record label, and plans to enter the North American market in earnest.
