A former elementary school teacher from Simi Valley has been arrested and charged with carrying on an illegal sexual relationship with a young student, performing vile sex acts on the boy. With multiple cases of teachers and sex acts performed on students, how can we prevent these perverts from our schools?

The Simi Valley teacher and mother of two was arrested and being held on $2-million bail for sex acts on a child and oral copulation with a person under 14 years of age.

Malia Brooks, who resigned from her teaching job at Garden Grove Elementary School in Simi Valley June 5, surrendered to police On Tuesday.

The 32-year-old had been arrested and charged with one count of a lewd act upon a child, one count of oral copulation of a person under 14 and three counts of genital penetration by a foreign object with a person under 14 years of age when the suspect is more than 10 years older than the victim.

Malia Brooks, 32, plead guilty to three counts of lewd conduct with a child under the age of 14. The teacher made the deal a day after she pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Semi Valley teacher could get a maximum of 16 years in prison, pay restitution and spend the rest of her life as a registered sex offender when she's sentenced in August.

"During the course of the investigation there have been no indications Malia Brooks had any other victims," said the Simi Valley Police Department detective.

The investigation began in February when the school district notified the police department of an incident of 'inappropriate conduct' between Brooks and a student.

Her attorney said outside court that she was suffering from a mental illness and was now receiving treatment.

Garden Grove Elementary School has provided counseling for any children affected by the events.

One distraught mother, whose daughter attends the school said, "My daughter has a good relationship with that teacher and I still don't believe it."

She said that parents had been aware that an investigation was taking place and said the school had her full support for "trying to minimize the impact on their children."

Why do these teacher stories of sex acts with children keep occurring? These sick individuals have such easy access to children and there should be a better screening process in school.

A science teacher at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School in Silver Spring was arrested Wednesday for several sex offenses that occurred at the school, police said.

Benjamin Robert Cano, 33, of the 200 block of Night Haven Court in Edgewater was arrested and charged with three counts of sexual abuse of a minor and three counts of committing a third-degree sex offense, according to Montgomery County Police.

Two students from the school claimed their teacher, Cano, had touched them inappropriately, police said.

The two girls also told detectives that Cano inappropriately touched a 12-year-old female student, police said. A further investigation revealed that Cano had touched all three victims inappropriately between August 2012 and May 2013.
